PROJECT : ENRICHING SURINAME

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."-Lao Tzu

The main objectives of this event are to support and develop martial arts market in Suriname. Moreover, make a contribution to underprivileged communities by creating awareness for the problems and therefore providing the opportunity to have a simultaneous effect which will stimulate the economic growth of this region. The stimulating and improving effect will influence the three spheres of society, which are the Market, State and Civil society. Consequently, creating a balance between these spheres which stimulate further development of the concerning community.

The mission that has to be implemented is:

Creating awareness of a potential market to stimulate it growth and contribution to the economy by guiding their society to stimulate their economic growth.

The social movement, which will be a primary tool of the implementation, can be defined as collective enterprises to establish a new order in life. Another tool which is of great importance is the effect of change. The effect of change will be achieved by a collective effort in the social order by substituting new values and suitable forms of organization for the ones already in existence.

DEFINING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Community Development is, according to the International Cooperation Administration, defined as a process of social action in which the people of a community:

1. organize themselves for planning and action
2. define their common and individual needs and problems
3. make group and individual plans to meet their needs and solve their problems
4. execute these plans with a maximum reliance upon community resources
5. supply these resources when necessary with services and materials from governmental and non-governmental agencies outside the community

Another approach is a method by which the people who live in local villages or communities become involved in helping to improve their own economic and social conditions and thereby become effective working groups in programs of national development. If we consider a regional implication in the method we can see the involvement of formal organizations of members of more or less extensive local neighborhoods for the purpose of joint action in meeting a broad set of needs. Another definition of Community Development is an organized activity inclusive as to participants and beneficiary, with multiple interests and objectives, and operated in a delimited geographic area. The definition above includes four conditions in order for a behavior collectivity to be classified as a social movement.

- the desire for change is embodied in the collectivity
- some type of degree of formal organization
- geographical scope as to exist beyond the boundaries of a single community
- persistence in time

These four elements do not only exist independently but must also appear simultaneously in a complex so as to observable as a behavior collectivity whole. This will result in a effort of replacing old ways and attitudes with new - poverty, isolation, misery, ignorance and apathy with better crops, animals and home practices, roads, health, education and the active participation of free men shaping their own future. It is a healthy and strong method to create bonds between social groups based on cooperation for mutual interests in place of age-old indifference or hostility based on friction and suspicion. The social movement is said to have a ideology if it is both for and against something -for.

IMPLEMENTATION

The following characteristics of community development are recognized:

- the desire for change is embodied in the collectivity
- some type of degree of formal organization
- geographical scope as to exist beyond the boundaries of a single community
- persistence in time

Change:
Change represents the social and cultural change in a concept of community development. It is successful to the extent that individuals and groups of individuals are motivated to give up ideas and habits of long standing and adopt new ways. It can be considered as a culture of change.

Organization:
Different units are organized or structured in small communities and councils like villages, small towns and suburban communities. Bringing these communities in relation is an involvement of community development.

Geographical scope:
Community development has for target to reach the dispersion of free people living in rural communities throughout the world. The existence of large numbers of communities in developing countries is still common.

Persistence in time:
This is the fourth trait, which is the persistence in time, is not a problem of fixing a minimum duration of the development. Some movements take long time to mature while others can develop and die within a few years.

After reflecting these four important traits necessary to develop the movement, the necessary tools to implement the concept will be developed. To make the implementation successful the above traits have to be respected.

TOOLS OF IMPLEMENTATION

The chosen operational tools for implementation are the following:
- Preserve the origin of the athletes.
- Improve the training program of the trainers by training them towards an international sports level.
- Existing gyms will be reshaped and supplied with the necessary tools and installing new gyms in districts all over the    country.
- Star Athletes will be invited to provide clinics for ten days.

The following section will explain more clearly the functioning and performance of each tool:

Origin preservation of athletes:
Many top performing athletes have given up their nationality in order to improve their career and success since the opportunities were not available in their home country. This has for consequence that the development of the country of origin deteriorates and other countries receiving these athletes keep rising. The goal of the event is to stimulate preservation of nationality and representation of origin. To do this, it is necessary to supply opportunities to develop career and success on an international level. The following tools will have an important role in giving these opportunities.

Training programs improvement:
Training is important in the athletic world. While new technologies appear in enhancement of training and healthcare, athletes can perform better and more efficient. But if these techniques are not accessible to all sportsmen, then a difference of performance level will occur leaving underprivileged sportsmen on a low level. To improve trainings, the current training methods of the local trainers will be evaluated. After this step, it will be compared to high level training programs used by professionals. This will be performed by a team of specialists with experience in this field of interest.

Reshaping and installing gyms:
In order to improve the training programs, there is an important requirement of the necessary equipment to train people. This consists of evaluating and inspecting the current condition of the gyms on construction, facilities, capacity, safety and content of equipment. A checklist will be formed by specialists for evaluation and inspection. If the gym is not conforming to the regulations then the necessary steps will be taken to restore the gym. The geographic area will be also investigated to locate the availability for gyms to different districts. If some communities can not reach a gym since the distance is too far, then installing a new facility will be considered.

Star Athletes providing clinics:
Seminars and workshops are very useful to stimulate and initiate a social movement. This is also an effective way to reach the social community that is situated outside the field of interest. These communities do not need to practice sports but can relate their current activity to the given model at the clinics. Professional sportsmen are often seen as examples and idols. If these persons can show their way of achieving results then their will be a high ratio of commitment to the social movement.

FOLLOWING THE MOVEMENT

The result that is expected is that the rest of the underprivileged will also be integrated in the social movement. Some qualities that are expected to be seen in the developing community are:

- self confidence
- ambition
- responsibility

These are just a few basic qualities a person needs to achieve its goals. It is crucial to reach every subject in the communities from the biggest multinational to the most underprivileged. The gathering of these two extremes cases can reveal consciousness and consequently develop economies and well being of the population.
